Scope

This guide provides basic knowledge and skills for ensuring a healthy and safe workplace. It presents a step-by-step approach for dealing with workplace health and safety problems, namely:

• Recognize potential problems relating to library work.
• Evaluate risk.
• Develop and implement controls.
• Evaluate effectiveness of controls.
• Identify sources of health and safety information.

Details of measurement techniques and exposure evaluation are beyond the scope of this guide. Such information is available from the Inquiries Service of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). For detailed hazard evaluation and implementation of control measures, a specialist should be consulted.
